Protection That Looks Beautiful

Navigating the choices between oils, acrylics, and solids to find the perfect finish for your deck.

Understanding Your Finish Options

One of the most common questions we get is: "Should I use a clear sealer or a solid color?" The answer depends on how much you want to see the wood grain versus how much protection you need.

The 3 Tiers of Stain

Semi-Transparent

Best for: New or high-quality wood (Cedar/Redwood).

This allows the natural grain and knots to show through while adding a slight tint. It penetrates deep into the wood but requires maintenance every 2-3 years.

Semi-Solid

Best for: Older decks with some imperfections.

This provides richer color and stronger UV protection than semi-transparent, hiding some wood grain but still retaining the texture of the lumber.

Solid Stain

Best for: Damaged wood or color matching.

Often confused with paint, solid stain sits on top of the wood and hides the grain completely. It offers the maximum protection against sun and weathering.

Quality Materials & Application

We do not use "bargain bin" stains that flake off after one winter. We exclusively use professional-grade products from trusted brands like Cabot and Sherwin Williams.

The "Back-Brushing" Technique

Many contractors simply spray the stain on and leave. This leads to uneven coverage and drips. At Weets Home Improvement, we back-brush our stains. This forces the product deep into the wood fibers and ensures a uniform, professional finish that won't peel prematurey.

A Note on "Deckover" Products

Be careful with thick, acrylic "resurfacer" paints sold at big box stores. While they promise to fill cracks, they often trap moisture inside the wood, causing it to rot from the inside out. We generally recommend avoiding these products in favor of high-quality oil or water-based stains that let the wood breathe.
